Chapter 20. Product Liability and Safety Legislation
Product liability is the liability of a supplier, designer or manufacturer to the customer for injury or loss resulting from a defect in that product. This has been the focus of attention for some time. The first reason was the publication, in July 1985, of a directive by the European Community, and the second was the wave of actions under United States law that resulted in spectacular awards for claims involving death or injury. By 1984, sums awarded resulting from court proceedings often reached $1 million.
