2.Theory

In this chapter I will outline the theoretical premises on which this study is based. The first section is dedicated to the question of culture in 'cultural memory', the transcultural turn and the notion of transnational memory. In the second part the notion of the archive is addressed. A brief overview over archival theory and archivology is given before introducing the concept of the 'audiovisual archive'. The role of filmmaking as archival intervention is discussed, especially in view of the essay film as an epistemological tool. In the third and final section the concept of remediation is presented and its limitations for memory studies will be outlined.
