CHAPTER 3

Remote Sensing Feature Selection and Extraction

This chapter reviews the important fields of feature selection and extraction of remote sensing images. These steps are of paramount importance in many applications: from the posterior image segmentation and object location, to properly estimate physical variables from the images. A wide range of standard techniques have been adopted by the remote sensing community but, at the same time, many of them have been necessarily adapted to the particular features of images. In addition, the issue of extracting physically-meaningful features from images is an active field. We will review the main contributions in the area through an extensive literature review and real examples.
