Power Electronics

Power electronics is the knowledge to process and control the flow of electric energy by supplying voltages and currents in a form that is optimally suited for user loads [1]. A typical block diagram is shown in Figure 4.1 [2]. The input power can be AC and DC sources. A general example is that the AC input power is from the electric utility. The output power to load can be AC and DC voltages. The power processor in the block diagram is usually called a converter. Conversion technologies are the knowledge to construct converters. Therefore, there are four categories of converters [3]:

1.  AC/DC converters/rectifiers

2.  DC/DC converters

3.  DC/AC inverters/converters

4.  AC/AC converters
