Synthesis Gas-Based Fuels

A number of parties have elected to abandon cellulose treatment/fermentation in favor of its conversion to synthesis gas. By so doing, they are lifting a page from well-established gasification of fossil fuels such as coal to produce liquid fuels. Following gasification, a number of applications of the synthesis gas that are under consideration by biotech companies are Fischer–Tropsch technology, the ExxonMobil methanol-to-gasoline system, and the use of acetogens, such as Clostridium ljungdahlii to ferment the gas to liquid fuels. Each of these systems is discussed with their developers, such as Lanzatech, Ineos, Coskata, and Syntec biofuels among others. The processes are described in context with natural ...
