Synthesis Gas-Based Fuels

A number of parties have elected to abandon cellulose treatment/fermentation in favor of its conversion to synthesis gas. By so doing, they are lifting a page from well-established gasification of fossil fuels such as coal to produce liquid fuels. Following gasification, a number of applications of the synthesis gas that are under consideration by biotech companies are Fischer–Tropsch technology, the ExxonMobil methanol-to-gasoline system, and the use of acetogens, such as Clostridium ljungdahlii to ferment the gas to liquid fuels.
