LESSONS FROM A YEAR IN CRISIS

I BEGAN WRITING THIS BOOK in 2020, a year filled with one unprecedented issue and crisis after another: COVID-19, an awakening to widespread racial injustice, historic levels of unemployment, and election-related chaos. Many employers found themselves on their own when it came to providing guidance and setting policy during a rapidly evolving global pandemic, while others struggled with how to talk about these momentous events. Just as necessity is the mother of invention, communications and crisis response plans normally developed over weeks or months had to come together in just days or even hours.
