3.1. Introduction

Astronomy has been, and remains, a pioneering discipline for the sharing of scientific data. This chapter discusses the development of the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Centre (Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS)) since its creation in 1972. The CDS is exemplary in several respects, including through its CTS certification, FAIRization of data, proximity to research and international role. It is facing several challenges, such as the rapid evolution of research with new tools, equipment and types of data, the volume of data to be managed and integration within the European infrastructure cloud.

3.2. The Strasbourg Astronomical Data Centre

The Strasbourg Astronomical Data Centre (CDS)1 provides reference data and services to the international scientific community.

It was created in 1972, within the Observatoire Astronomique de Strasbourg2, by the Institut National d’Astronomie et de Géophysique (INAG, the French National Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics) and the Université Louis Pasteur, and is still under the responsibility of their successors, the Institut National des Sciences de l’Univers (INSU, National Institute for Earth Sciences and Astronomy) of the CNRS3 and the Université de Strasbourg4.

The CDS is a team that is part of the Observatoire Astronomique ...
