The laws that are likely to affect people working in the media divide into four broad areas. Note that this section gives details of UK laws. Most countries will have laws covering the same divisions as those given here, but you will need to check.
Many lawyers spend their working lives arguing whether a casual remark is or is not defamatory or whether an action was done maliciously. The ramifications of the law are too complex for people doing research to rely solely on their own knowledge and judgement. It is one thing to know the wording of an Act, but another to know how it has been, or will be, interpreted, thus establishing a precedent in law.
