The years 2007 and 2008 were big years for politics and security in the Arctic. In March, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its Fourth Assessment Report on the observed and predicted impacts of anthropogenic climate change. It found that human-caused warming of the planet was unequivocal and was especially pronounced in the circumpolar Arctic region (IPCC 2007).
