When the Internet first came about, it was a way for academics to share research and swap papers. Today, there is less emphasis on reading and more on consuming media. Our Facebook feeds are flooded with auto-playing videos. GIFs are a popular form of communication. And sites such as Pinterest and Imgur have people scrolling through images and videos for hours.
