Incarceration in the United States is expensive, estimated to cost from 80.7 billion to 182 billion dollars each year (Wagner & Rabuy, 2017). Even more expensive is the cost of harm to public safety due to recidivism. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, nearly half of those leaving prison return within the first five years of release (Durose & Antenangeli, 2021). A major predictor of recidivism is the inability to obtain or maintain a job after release. This high level of recidivism is a drain on the economy and unsustainable.
