Better workplaces require better working conditions for employees, including pay that is fair and decent for all employees. But knowing what makes pay fair and decent is not easy. Individual judgments of fairness are subjective, and assessing how others perceive fairness can be particularly difficult. As a blueprint for the future, the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) emphasize “equal pay for work of equal value” (sub-goal 8.5) as a pathway to fairer more equal societies.
