How to Holistically Support Unemployed Jobseekers

In the United States, unemployed jobseekers typically encounter stigma. They are perceived by others to possess an attribute that, in Goffman’s (1963, p. 3) words, “reduces them” from a “whole and usual person to a tainted, discounted one.” Although unemployment is a social problem, stemming from social and economic forces, stigma means unemployed jobseekers are perceived by others, including employers, as responsible for their unemployment.
