6.4 Summary

PHA is a great tool for beginning to understand the hazards of a system. In some cases, a PHA is all that is needed to analyze a simple system. It is also the first step in the hazard analysis of more complicated systems. PHAs are usually done during the design phase of a system. However, there are no rules that say it cannot be used after a system has been put in place and used to eliminate hazards in existing systems. As with any of the tools discussed in this book, determine the hazards and then do something about them. The job is not complete until the hazards are eliminated or mitigated. The analysis tools are a means to an end, not the end themselves.
