Gimme shelter

Extreme weather and your library

Abstract

Across North America, freak weather has become more common. Extreme cold conditions drive people indoors. Librarians must deal with large influxes of people who arrive in libraries and stay to keep warm. Library facilities are strained. Washrooms can become very dirty. Hot weather can have similar effects on library operations. Patrons can suffer dehydration and heat stroke. Elderly patrons are particularly vulnerable to hot weather conditions. An interior designer suggests that libraries should be redesigned in light of changing weather patterns.
