The process of product development involves many choices. The development project itself is selected from a portfolio of candidate projects. The value proposition for the product is chosen from alternatives. In the early development phases, teams select the architecture for the product and the design concepts for the subsystems, components, and parts. Much depends on decisions being made well since they strongly influence the eventual quality, reliability, and costs of the product and have significant consequences for the schedule of the development project, its risks, and its costs.
