Multi-Layer Networks: Modeling and Design

So far the discussion of the book has been concentrated on single-layer networks. In this chapter we will extend the presentation of Chapters 4 and 9 (problem formulations) and Chapters 5 and 10 (optimization methods), and proceed to networks composed of more than one layer of resources. Recall that examples of multi-layer modeling and its importance to the design of communication networks have already been addressed in Sections 2.8 and 3.7. In this chapter we will deal only with selected, most characteristic issues related to multilayer network modeling; more comprehensive treatment of this subject would require a book on its own.
