Organizational form and formlessness in the digital age
The powerful relationship between technological change and organizing practices has been recognized throughout the modern study of formal organizations. In the 20th century, most research on technology and organizing focused on the study of organizational forms. More than 50 years ago, Burns and Stalker (1961, 6) noted, “Technical progress and development of new organizational forms proceed in tandem; advancement in either field augurs movement in the other field.” Early in the digital era as well, scholars were prone to say the affordances of digital technologies caused the emergence of new organizational forms.
