Introduction

Mathematics and mathematical models are ubiquitous in macroeconomic theory building. One reason is that mathematics for many researchers is linked to analyses characterised by internal consistency, precision and objectivity. However, it is contested what role mathematics and mathematical models in practice play – and should play – as a scientific language and an analytical tool in doing economics.
