INTRODUCTION

One of the dilemmas in the enterprise of reviewing a wide subject field like physical education is what to select and what to reject. My own prejudices reflect a concern for curriculum and teaching in schools and a narrow view of research in higher education. Much of the research endeavours within this in higher education centre on the sports sciences, which have little real relevance for physical education; I have therefore chosen not to include them in this essay.
