Appendix A: What Is Lean IT? A Working Definition

Fundamentally, Lean is the practice of collaborative learning, continuous improvement, and innovation. One learns by asking questions. So to address the question “What is Lean IT?” we begin by asking “What is Lean?”

In his opening address to the first Lean IT Summit, held in Paris in October 2011, Dan Jones offered this definition of Lean:

My current hypothesis is this, and I choose my words very carefully: Lean is a journey. Lean is the practice (not theory but derived from experience) of using the scientific method (PDCA, hypotheses and testing) in order to gain insights into how we can intervene in a dynamic system to make it improve.
