In the first chapter, we showed how a multitiered application in the datacenter prior to virtualization required different physical servers, with each server running a single application (Figure 1-2). Once virtualization was introduced, however, that same datacenter could run the same multitiered applications using VMs, consolidating them from eight underutilized servers to three fully utilized servers (Figure 2-1).
