Physical security involves several elements, all of which are necessary to enhance the institution's protection. This chapter examines each of those elements and walks the reader through an exercise in evaluating the facility's existing protection. Most of the measures are commonplace for protecting any structure. Others are unique to the protection of valuable collections. Management needs to understand how each measure is applied and what “best practices” are found throughout the variety of cultural properties. A checklist to assist in the evaluation of systems, locking devices, and other potential vulnerabilities is included.
