Chapter 9

Theft Prevention

Since a majority of losses from institutions are internally related, it stands to reason that careful scrutiny in the hiring process and careful monitoring of daily activities are important to the protection of the institution and its assets. In this chapter, key control and package inspection are among the important processes that are explained. External theft is usually the result of poor performance in closing inspections and inattention to detail during operating hours. Restrictions on after-hours visitation, especially by family members or friends of staff should be discouraged.
