In this chapter, the use of force in cultural institutions is highly discouraged. Law enforcement agencies put their officers through weeks of training, much of which includes proper methods for restraining violent offenders. Security officers, proprietary, or contract, receive little or no orientation to any form of self-defense or use of force. The institution needs a “last resort” policy, which is defined in this chapter. The institution also must develop a “continuum of force”, which offers several alternatives before arriving at that step where the application of force is required. All staff members need orientation in avoiding physical confrontation and de-escalating potentially violent situations.
