Chapter 24. Signed Applets and Security

When the Java language was introduced in late 1995, security was arguably the biggest hurdle to its widespread adoption. At that time, Web pages contained text, image files, and other types of static information that was transferred from a Web server to a Web user.

Java was the first programming language that could be used to send interactive programs over the World Wide Web. Because these programs run on the user's system, rather than running on a Web server like a CGI program, there are serious security issues to consider. Java requires highly restrictive security to prevent a malicious programmer from using the language to wreak havoc on the systems of anyone who runs programs from a Web page.
