Although ColdFusion boasts many functions that work independently of databases, it's most often used by developers who want to integrate their database with the Web. For the majority of ColdFusion applications, your database will be the key element. It contains the actual text of all that useful stuff you or your client wants to serve up on the Web—names, dates, prices, whatever—all indexed in a format that's easy for computers to access, but ugly to the eyes of most humans.
