BizTalk provides a framework that uses XML, XML schemas, and MIME to enable systems to communicate between applications and organizations in an open, independent format.

Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) is a standard way to encode binary data for transport across the Internet. MIME is used extensively by e-mail packages to encode attachments.
