These instructions apply to most Unix derivatives, including the commonly encountered Linux and FreeBSD. Before going any further, you must decide whether you want to install a precompiled package or to compile from source code. If you go with a precompiled package (a Red Hat RPM file, for instance), you probably don't need any help from here, so the instructions that follow assume you will be compiling from source. Don't be afraid; it's not very hard —just, well, sort of interesting. Your operating system almost certainly came with the right tools, so you can do it all as described in the following steps. You tend to get a better installation this way insofar as it is tailored to your system.
