I’ll never forget when I ran into the doctor’s office as a rookie parent, sure that my baby’s skull had somehow gotten broken. Panicked, I showed the doctor how a certain area of the baby’s head had an odd-looking depression. The doctor laughed because he had seen this reaction about a million times from other rookie parents. He showed me a symmetrical mark on the other side of the baby’s skull, saying, “It would be highly unusual for a skull to get broken symmetrically, don’t you think?” He then went on to explain how this depression was a normal feature of a newborn’s skull.
