Process Tracing

No discussion of UNIX problems would be complete without mentioning process tracing. In a nutshell, because (by nature) the operating system is notified about system requests that a process makes, one can use tools that will trace this process. This can be highly tedious work, but if you approach it smartly, it can be quite rewarding.

For example, I was once the system administrator for an obscure UNIX database system, which was written by some folks who weren’t too concerned with security. They recommended that all files be “world readable and writable.” Naturally, I wasn’t too keen on that and, after debate, we generated a list of what permissions were appropriate for the users versus administrators.
