Router Types
Vehicles are also built for one purpose: to get from point A to point B. Still, there are many varieties, from backhoes to Porsches. This is also true of routers: There are many different types of routers, with many different varieties of options and control methods.
There are two main types of routers: SOHO (Small Office/Home) and enterprise. SOHO routers typically serve anywhere from 1 to 10 users, whereas enterprise routers can be responsible for the traffic of thousands of users.
Enterprise routers are built on the assumption that they will be dealing with a lot of traffic—so they typically devote a lot of processing power to dealing with their main task, forwarding network data to the next router.
