Godot Engine1 was conceived around the end of 2007, at a time when we (Juan Linietsky and Ariel Manzur) noticed two big changes in the hardware available for game development. The first was simply an improvement in hardware, which made it more available on lower-end and portable devices, like the PlayStation Portable and the first iPhone. Of course, portable gaming existed before 2007 (the Nintendo DS was out at the time), but those devices were so low end that games had to be made specifically for them, and it was not viable to use a general purpose game engine there. In the case of the iPhone and PSP, for the first time they were “normal computers,” but portable.
