Chapter 2. Windows XP Installation and Configuration

Microsoft has attempted to make each version of Windows a little easier to install. Users of Windows 3x will remember how painful that installation could become if you had anything other than the hardware that Microsoft anticipated. Giving the old installation routine an incorrect answer out of simple ignorance ensured that you’d perform the installation again. Windows 95 was a little better, and Windows ME/2000 made the process almost automatic, except for a few answers. Installing Windows XP is about the same level of complexity as Windows 2000 in most cases.
