Lesson 11. Downloading YouTube Videos

In this lesson, you learn how to download YouTube videos to your computer or portable device.

Why Downloading Isn’t an Official Option—Yet

As you learned in Lesson 1, “Getting to Know YouTube,” YouTube is a streaming video service. That means that it streams its videos from its site to your computer screen. You don’t actually download and save the videos to your computer; the videos are streamed in real time to your web browser using the Adobe Flash Player.

The problem with the streaming video approach is that the videos you watched aren’t saved to your PC’s hard drive; if you want to watch a video when you’re not connected to the Internet, you can’t.
