62 SAN Volume Controller: Best Practices and Performance Guidelines 5.1 Controller affinity and preferred path In this section, we describe the architectural differences between common storage subsystems in terms of controller “ affinity” ( also referred to as preferred controller) and “ preferred path”. In this context, affinity refers to the controller in a dual- controller subsystem that has been assigned access to the back- end storage for a specific LUN under nominal conditions ( that is to say, both controllers are active).
