CHAPTER 9

SYSTEMATIC SCENARIO WALKTHROUGHS WITH ART-SCENE

Neil Maiden

Centre for HCI Design, City University, London, UK

THIS CHAPTER reports the research and development work on ART-SCENE, a process and environment for using scenarios to discover stakeholder requirements for a new system in a systematic manner. It describes ART-SCENE'S major elements: (i) the ART-SCENE scenario; (ii) software tools for generating and walking through these scenarios; (iii) process guidance for scenario walkthroughs, and; (iv) the scenario workshop environment. Each element is demonstrated with features of the processes, tools and scenarios, supported by a running example that is also available on the ART-SCENE web site.

APPLICABILITY

ART-SCENE can be applied to discover requirements for a wide range of systems. The main application so far has been to specify three air traffic management systems—ART-SCENE'S automatic generation of alternative courses can complement hazard analysis work that underpins the development of safety cases. Given its roots in use case–driven approaches, ART-SCENE can also support the specification of information systems, while its use of web technologies can support distributed requirements engineering processes.

KEY FEATURES

ART-SCENE incorporates innovative software tools for generating scenarios from use case specifications and guiding the ...
