Consultation in Schools
To be successful in the consultant role, school counselors must have a theoretical base and models from which to operate. Theory provides a basis for understanding what helps people change their attitudes, skills, behaviors, and expectations (West & Idol, 1987). Models provide a conceptual framework for practice (Kratochwill & Bergan, 1990). A number of school consultation models are discussed in the professional literature (Brack et al., 1993; Dustin & Ehly, 1992; Erchul & Conoley, 1991; Fall, 1995; Kern & Mullis, 1993; Keys et al., 1998; Otwell & Mullis, 1997; West & Idol, 1993; White & Mullis, 1998). As with all models of consultation, these use problem-solving approaches to help consultees with school-related concerns and help them be more effective with similar problems in the future (Dougherty, 2000; Kampwirth & Powers, 2015).
The approach to consultation in the schools presented in this text is supported by theory while drawing on established models to create a framework that will meet the needs of school counselors working as consultants.
