Leadership effort in school counseling is an essential skillset for implementing a comprehensive school counseling program, advocating for student needs, and creating systemic change in the school environment (ASCA, 2019a; Mullen et al., 2019). While leadership is essential, what does it look like in practice, and how can school counselors enhance their leadership capabilities? School counseling leadership is broken down into two aspects: qualities and roles. An overview of various qualities and styles of leadership are explored, followed by roles the school counselor embraces in leadership and advocacy efforts. As the school counselor is always data-driven, it is imperative that such roles and skills are delineated into measurable competencies, which further serve to promote leadership efforts.
