At its heart, Media Operations is simply the control of video playback to the screens. Screens control as a discipline has been around in some form since the invention of projectors and the inclusion of projection surfaces in scenic design for live events (try Googling “magic lantern” to learn just how long and storied a discipline this truly is). A full history of projection design will not be covered here, but instead we will look briefly at the relatively recent development of media servers in the entertainment technology market. For more in-depth discussion of media servers, I recommend Vickie Claiborne’s book Media Servers for Lighting Programmers (Routledge, 2014).
