Ordeal

The ordeal in stage 8 could be a deep test of physical agility or mental fortitude, or even a deep inner crisis that the heroine must face for her world, family, community and loved ones to continue to exist. This may take the form of the heroine facing her greatest fear or most dreaded enemy, requiring the heroine to pull on every bit of external and internal resource gathered at every junction of the journey to the inmost cave so that she grows into a David who slays her Goliath. Only through some form of ‘death' can the heroine be re-born, rejuvenated or enter a renaissance, undergoing a metaphorical resurrection that grants her great powers, foresight or insight to fulfil her destiny, or reach her journey's end. This is the great challenge of the heroine's journey and where everything she values is at stake. If she fails, she will either die or life as she knows it will never be the same again.

For Luke in Star Wars, this stage looked as follows:

• Inner journey: Ordeal — on the Death Star, Luke and Han dress as Stormtroopers, discover the princess and attempt to rescue her, but they are discovered.
• Outer journey: Attempting a big change — the alliance is tested as they engage with enemy troops.
