In golf, caddies are there to look out for and protect the golfer (aka the #1). Of course, caddies know how to golf, so they could easily aim to be a #1 themselves.
Some golf caddies have elected to fully embrace their 2iC role. Their focus is on selecting the best club for the golfer to use in a particular set of circumstances so that the golfer can focus exclusively on making the shot. If the golfer has to think about the different club options and the slope and the weather and the wind, they will not be able to concentrate as much on the shot.
