You made up your mind to jump into the exciting world of Second Life (SL). You're sitting at your computer, raring to go, but where to start? In this chapter, we walk you through how to get started, from creating an account to logging in and making it through the orientation tutorials. Get ready! Get set! Go!

Creating Your Account

When starting out in Second Life you'll need to decide what kind of account you want to create. Most people will be fine with a basic free account but you should know your options before you decide. Here's what you need to know about your choices:

Creating Your Account
  • First Basic: If this is your first Second Life account (if you already have an account and you've decided to have a second one you can't use this account type) and you don't intend to buy land right away you should be fine choosing a First Basic account. This is a free account.

  • Additional Basic: If you already have an account but you want a second avatar you should choose this type of account. You'll be charged for this second account ($9.99 at the time of this writing). This is a one time charge. Basic accounts (whether first or additional) are not landholding accounts and will have to be upgraded to Premium if you choose to buy land later.

  • Premium: If you know you'll be purchasing land right ...
