We don't know about you, but many mornings, we stand in front of the mirror wishing we could just take off 20 pounds, grow out a bad hair cut faster, or make the pants that are suddenly just a little snug fit a little better. One of the best parts of Second Life is the fun you can have with your avatar. Your avatar is your digital body in Second Life, and there's no end to how you can customize it. With just a simple click, you can change from male to female, fat to thin, tall to short — and those are just some of the possibilities!

In this chapter, we walk you through making changes to your avatar so you can shed that newbie look we created in Chapter 3 and get a custom body that suits your personal style.

Creating Your Second Life Persona

Avatar Anatomy

Before you can start editing your avatar, you need to get familiar with your avatar's anatomy (see Figure 5-1). Much of what you'll see here is similar to your real life body, but you'll note some important differences. Just like your real life body you have arms, legs, feet, torso, hands, and a head (see Figure 5-2). What you don't have in your virtual body are sex organs and imperfections (unless you add them).
