Chapter 7. Getting a Social Second Life

Finding residents in Second Life is always an interesting topic. You can run into folks by just wandering around or perhaps meet them at events. You can also use the Search tool (covered in depth in Chapter 4) to find them. Just remember, like in your First Life, not everyone wants to be found.

After you find someone, it's time to get social. In this chapter, we discuss allowing yourself to be found, joining groups, and attending events where you can meet even more people or share common activities.

Getting a Social Second Life

Your Second Life Profile

Who you are in Second Life (SL) is really a combination of a number of things, including what you do, what you say to other people, how you look, and the things you put in your profile. Imagine this: Across the room at a crowded party, you can peer into someone's wallet to see their birth date, what clubs they belong to, and even a list of their likes and dislikes. In SL, you can — simply by viewing someone's profile. Here are the basics about your profile:

  • Viewing: People can view your profile at any time (whether you are logged in to Second Life or not), and you will never know. Your profile is always viewable — what are you willing to let them know?

  • Auto profile: A portion of your profile is automatically generated. This information about you — such as ...
