Chapter 12. Staking Your Claim in Second Life

Everybody needs a home. A place to call your own is important to giving you a sense of belonging in Second Life. It also gives you another opportunity to be as creative as you want to be. You can rent an apartment or a house, rent land and build your own house, or buy your own island and make your own world. In this chapter we show you how to do all of this.

Finding a Place to Rent

You can rent space in SL, either for your own personal use or for your business. Renting space is not done through Linden Lab but as an agreement between two avatars. There is no formal lease policy or contract. Most landlords prefer you to pay for a month ahead of time, but some let you pay by the week. You are given access to a locked home or apartment and allowed to drop items there. After you stop paying rent, it is between you and the landlord as to what happens to your stuff.

Finding a Place to Rent

Tip

Before renting any property, ask the landlord for referrals from other tenants so you can see what kind of person you are doing business with. Always be cautious and ask many questions.
