To protect yourself online you must understand your environment. The environment is the space in which you are operating – in this instance, the operating system.
What follows is a very brief overview of the primary operating systems used by the private user.
Many other operating systems exist, such as Java, Linux, etc., but these are primarily associated with programming, specialists and commercial environments.
The majority of the content in this book is based on Windows because it’s the primary operating system in the majority of households, but the concepts, types of attacks and motivations are pretty much the same across all operating systems.
