7.1 The Aging Brain Analogy

Our perceptions of risk and how we carry out risk assessments are influenced by the maturity state of our brains (Rudolph et al.1). As we get older, we become more cautious about the risks that we decide to take. However, as a child we are less knowledgeable about what could cause us harm and what the potential impact of such a risk-taking activity would be. Consequently, parents and teachers go to great lengths to educate their children and pupils on how to safely navigate their way across a busy road. How do they do this? By teaching them to risk-assess the crossing and how to take appropriate risk responses.
