Chapter 7. Practical modelling techniques

This chapter looks at a series of practical modelling techniques that are a vital part of the modeller’s everyday arsenal. I will look at these in terms of the two model phases: the Shadow phase and the Update phase.

Generic financial modellers should note that the practical techniques described in this chapter are all equally valid for corporate financial modelling. Interpret the distinction between Shadow and Update phases as:

  • Shadow phase is all modelling prior to the first update of the model with the latest management accounting figures.
  • Update phase is all modelling from the first update of the model with the latest management accounting figures.
