11 Conclusion

I have attempted to address the problem of how change can be promoted when even the most intense affective response to an interpretation is not alterative. Much contemporary psychoanalytic clinical discussion has centered on what in addition to interpretation is needed to produce therapeutic change. The emphasis in this discourse has been on what the analyst can offer that the patient can absorb. This type of clinical thinking, wittingly or not, has kept the patient in a passive position. Such a model does not fit the contemporary analytic goals of authentic and meaningful living.
